Interesting. I'll note that Bob Goemans is a strong advocate of plenum systems which would be in line with what he's writing about in his article that's cited in this thread. That he would find another way to take a run at DSB's doesn't surprise me, really. I ran a plenum system for a year and had nitrate issues (20-50 ppm until I started dosing carbon sources) that caused some of my corals to brown out. So I'm not sure that I completely buy into his theory as it applies to our aquariums. After all, how deep is too deep before we start creating the oxygen-free (anaerobic rather than anoxic) zone that he warns against?

Hence the frequently seen rccommendation for DSBs to be 4" to 6", not "the deeper the better".

I have a good 6"+ in my tank and I have never had any issues with nitrates. My tank has been running about 2 1/2 years now so I can't speak for long term issues.
