Sugar Magnolia March 10, 2009 Share March 10, 2009 http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...hreadid=1593453 Discusses the new theory about DSB and elevated nitrate. I'm wondering if any of you that have deep sand beds have had nitrate issues. My sand bed is only about 1 1/2-2" and I've never had any nitrate issues. Origami March 10, 2009 Share March 10, 2009 Interesting. I'll note that Bob Goemans is a strong advocate of plenum systems which would be in line with what he's writing about in his article that's cited in this thread. That he would find another way to take a run at DSB's doesn't surprise me, really. I ran a plenum system for a year and had nitrate issues (20-50 ppm until I started dosing carbon sources) that caused some of my corals to brown out. So I'm not sure that I completely buy into his theory as it applies to our aquariums. After all, how deep is too deep before we start creating the oxygen-free (anaerobic rather than anoxic) zone that he warns against?
treesprite March 11, 2009 Share March 11, 2009 Hence the frequently seen rccommendation for DSBs to be 4" to 6", not "the deeper the better".
lanman March 11, 2009 Share March 11, 2009 However... Anthony Calfo recommends a 'remote deep sand bed' of 8-10 inches... bob
SteveM March 11, 2009 Share March 11, 2009 I have a good 6"+ in my tank and I have never had any issues with nitrates. My tank has been running about 2 1/2 years now so I can't speak for long term issues.
