Experience in hobby

How long have you been doing this?

2 years.

Who got you into the hobby?

A roommate from college has a 55 gallon reef.

Tank setup and equipment

This is an Oceanic 220 Gallon 84"x24"x24". I bought the tank from someone who was getting out of the hobby. It came with the stand, rock, skimmer, wet/dry, return pump and hood with retro reflectors and 175 watt lights x 4. It now has about 300lbs of rock, ETSS skimmer, Ľ hp chiller, ACIII, AquaSurf, Tunzes, Kalk Reactor, refugium, etc. I recently added a 45 gallon Oceanic Tech Tank as my frag tank. This tank was originally going to be a separate tank upstairs but I decided against having two systems.

What is your maintenance schedule like?

Water change 30 gallons 1x per month, sometimes 2x per month. Change carbon and phosphate remover 1x per month. Empty skimmer as needed (1x per week). Test Cal, Mag, Alk every month or two… or three. Scrape glass 1x per month. I feed garlic flake daily and feed a sheet of algae every other day.

How much time do you spend weekly?

2 Hours

Favorite Corals
  • Metallic Red Scoly
  • Red Mint Scoly
  • Green Efflo
  • Rainbow Monti
  • Blue Tort
  • Gadgets Acro
  • Red Lobo
  • Brain Sized Brain Coral
  • Nuclear Green Palys
  • Purple Monster

Where do you keep your water parameters?

1.025, 78-80 Temp, Ph 8.3-8.6, Calcium/Alk/Mag are tested monthly to ensure they are within a reasonable range.

What brand salt do you use?

Instant Ocean

What do you feed your fish and or corals?

Feed Flake food daily. Feed 1 sheet of algae every other day.

How do you maintain calcium/alkalinity?

Kalk and 2 Part.

Do you dose anything? If so, how much, how often?

Kalk 2x Daily. 2 Part as Needed.

What type of lighting do you have and what schedule do you have them on?

4 Ice Cap 250 Ballasts, 4 Ice Cap Pendants, Radium Bulbs. The lights are on 8am-5:30pm.

What kind of water flow do you have? How do you accomplish it?

220g - 2 Tunze 6101's, 1 Tunze 6000, 1 6080
45g - 1 Tunze 6045

What are your future plans for improvement/upgrade of the tank?

Install some fans. Sell off some corals to make room for new additions.

Inverts
  • Harlequin Shrimp
  • Cleaner Shrimp
  • RBTA
  • GBTA
  • Green Carpet Anemone

What makes your setup special or unique?

The six Tangs and how long it is.

If you had to start from scratch, would you do anything different?

My tank has a large glass support that blocks the two middle lights. I wish I had a tank without a brace in the middle.

I would have put a float switch in my freshwater trash can earlier (would have prevented many basement floods).

Do you have any advice for those folks whom are new to the hobby.

You are probably over feeding your tank. Test your water or you will kill your coral.

Personal

What is your favorite fish and coral?

Naso Tang and Scolymias.

What are your other hobbies?

Quads, Scuba… but honestly… who has time for OTHER hobbies.

Why did you choose the screen name you did?

My name is Hunter and I have a reef.

What is the last book you read?

How Fit is your Business.

Scotch or burbon?

Beer.
